Hello, my name is Teddy Coward. My strongest interest is in politics – in its history, theories and institutions. I have grown up in a cosy part of London, on the outskirts of the city’s typical commotion and, in many ways, this has heavily shaped my politics. To generalise, it is an area that holds liberal social values but is economically conservative. As such, if I HAD to explain my politics, then I am often (though not always) the embodiment of that.
But in truth: I am ignorant. I believe we all are. Although I have just used it to explain a bit about my beliefs, I also object to the use of “right-left” labelling in politics. Such labels are designed to create simple narratives for people to follow and believe in (which can be useful), but often by way of shutting down the entirety of the opposing view.
Hence why I want to be a part of this project. In today’s world, the divisions are palpable: Brexiteers versus so-called “Bremoaners”; Trump supporters versus his critics; pro-Palestinians versus supporters of a strong Israeli state. Whichever side of the argument you are on, I believe compromise is often the way towards progress, and therefore a platform such as this, which can help lead to such compromise, is much-needed. I look forward to help making it a success.
