Hi, I'm Ben! I'm an 18-year-old from the UK, hoping to study law next year at university.
I would consider myself to be on the left side of the political spectrum, significantly so with regard to social issues and moderately on economic ones. I am an atheist, but feel that respect is necessary when discussing anyone's deeply held beliefs. That said, I do strongly believe that in a civilised society, freedom from religion is just as important as freedom of religion, and am very interested in discussing the impact of faith on politics.
I can't wait to hear a spectrum of well-articulated differing opinions through this project, particularly given how easy it is to get enclosed in echo chambers of discussion nowadays.
I am always willing to play devil's advocate in debates, but there are some religious and conservative positions which I could not honestly defend. This does not mean that these positions are actually indefensible. It is instead indicative of my own lack of understanding. Though we may not manage to always convince each other through our discussions, I hope that this project can be a tool for expanding our understanding of viewpoints which we all too easily characterize as 'stupid' or 'evil'.
